Rod and I know each other from work here in England, he now lives in France , but I bagged an interview during one of his visits to Cambridge.

behind the scenes stuff here

This show’s got great guitar riffs and catchy hooks from an award winning musician Arthur Yoria. He’s from my home state of Texas and writes great lyrics too! In case some are not into Rock, the lineup is swaped ’round starting with a mellower song by Syd.

Show #3 Technicalities & Rod

Interview

My wife really liked this interview. I was doing a little bit of editing, sitting next to her on the sofa. Being considerate, I asked “is this distracting?, should I get my headphones?”. She said no & that she really was enjoying listening to Rod–she says his interview is her favourite so far.

Of course she hears all my shows many times over before they’re actually published. Unfortunately she hears them repeatedly while I’m editing a particular interview segment (trying to get rid of all my superfluous comments without cutting out the interviewee). Or she hears a new song I’ve just stumbled on and can’t get enough of. By the time the show’s been published and I’ve checked it a few times to make sure it’s as ready as it can be, we’re both a bit fed up with the sound effects and talking bits.

This show is really a work in progress. When I talk about it to people, I’m not quite sure how to express what I’m looking for in the interviews. But that’s because I’m not quite sure yet. I wrote about it a bit here, but to be honest I’m figuring it out as I go. I think the interview with Rod will help to balance the show a bit, even if it just stops folks thinking this site is all about World War II.

Music Stuff

I’m enjoying finding absolutely “stonkin‘” songs for the show. It’s really cool getting in touch with artists too. I’ve got an excuse to contact them, I can say nice stuff to them (how their music is so good). At first I’d just include a show if it was referred to as PodSafe. Now I read the blurb on their website, see if it’s copyrighted, and go ahead and ask the artist for permission to include it in the show. It’d be really great to help a talented artist to get some folks listening and talking about their stuff. I’ve become really big fans of quite a few musicians I’d never even heard of a few days before. Sometimes I find great sites which I know are hosting more than a few talents in the same few minutes. Other times I go a few weeks without anything worth keeping. It’s a lotta fun when you “strike gold”.

Show #2 Doug

Doug is my nextdoor neighbour.  My wife and I enjoy a good rapport with him.  We exchange pleasantries across the fence and keep an eye on each other’s house when on holiday. When (not if) my kids are playing football in the backyard, and their ball goes over the fence, he’s happy for them to climb over and get it.   That sort of thing.

This was the first time I’d ever heard about him being captured by the
Germans in "the War".

behind the scenes stuff here

Music-wise, I’ve got Tara Leigh Cobble providing some great “southern rock”.  Her website and it’s forums are great way to get a feel for the artist behind the music.  Check it out and say "hi" to her there.  I did and got a reply from her pretty quickly—-cool!

Suzie from Note For a Child is a fellow Cambridge resident who used to work as a medical doctor. You can hear clips of her and Daniel’s music on their website, and find out about their gigs and album.  They’ve got a great sound.

Show #2 Technicalities & Doug

by @ 1:01 am. Filed under Technicalities

Interview

I’m happier with this show, compared to the first one. Better sound with a mic connected to my laptop, plus I wasn’t quite as nervous doing the “talkie-bits”. Still, it’s my least favorite part of the whole process: talking. Which is funny ’cause in real-life it’s one of my favorite things. Must be knowing you’re being recorded, and not knowing who’s listening or whether anyone’s listening. My wife says I sound very flat in my show whereas I’m much more “animated” the rest of the time. I wanna be myself and “real” rather than try to sound like a “radio guy” but I still expect to get more comfortable with it all.

I’ve spent loads of time on the website. My perfectionism sticking out like a sore thumb. I have a “beta” version of the website now so I can experiment without breaking the “real” website. I want the best from two different WordPress themes, but need the patience to rewrite the CustomStyleSheet in one of them to match the colors from the other. It’s tedious enough that I haven’t gotten very far with the idea yet.

Computer Blues

The excitement with producing this show was that I filled up my hard disk drive halfway through production. I was attaching my 1GB SD memory via my trusty DigiCamera, and attaching another little USB pen-drive thingy just hoping I could scrape through without loosing any more editing than I already had.

Obsession

I am also trying to come up with a bit of a “production schedule”. It’s not really as impressive as it might sound. The whole idea is a way to stop me from spending all of my time on the show. I’m gonna ration my FirstPersonShow work such that I can only produce one show every month and a half. That is to try and protect a little of my wife’s sanity and keep me from neglecting her and the Boys. It’s just that when I get a new interview I can’t wait to hurry up and edit it. Then I think, “right, almost done (Ha!) so I’ll just spend a few minutes (Ha!) editing it. Then I think, all that’s done, so I don’t want to wait any longer than needed before publishing it–what a shame to have it almost ready but not available for anyone to hear! I really don’t want to slow down making the shows, but it’s a good idea for me to be balanced and sensible. We’ll see how it goes for July and August.

Special thanks to Rob Costlow for kindly allowing me to use his brilliantly thoughtful and unique piano music.  You hear it in the intro and outro, the song is "Family" from his CD "Sophmore Jinx".  Join me and buy it here.
